Fastback Networks Powers High Capacity Mobile Backhaul in NYC for Pope Francis Visit & Global Citizen Concert

San Jose, California — October 6, 2015  Fastback® Networks today announced that its Intelligent Backhaul Radio (IBR) was deployed for a Tier 1 mobile network operator to provide the temporary wireless backhaul vital to high capacity mobile service in New York City during of the visit of Pope Francis and the Global Citizen Concert, events held from September 24 – 26. Deployed by the wireless infrastructure services company AMP Communications to carry Tier 1 operator traffic, the Fastback IBR delivered 100% up-time across its 5-day deployment, averaging 800 to 900 Mbps performance in obstructed line of sight (oLOS) and complete non line of sight (NLOS) conditions, making possible service for the event attendees in previously unreachable locations.

AMP Communications was engaged by a Tier 1 operator to support the deployments and solve backhaul problems hampering service in diverse locations across the city. From the Global Citizen concert in Central Park, to Pope Francis events at Central Park, the Freedom Tower in lower Manhattan and at Madison Square Garden, AMP designed and installed temporary infrastructure to provide quality service for the huge surge beyond typical mobile traffic.

“The IBR brought a completely new level of capacity and versatility to temporary service and Cell (Site) on Wheels (CoW) deployments. For these events, the demands placed on the mobile network for high capacity and pervasive service far exceeded the available capacity and Line of Sight limitations of legacy solutions,” said Robert Maxwell, Project Manager for AMP Communications. “The IBR made fast work of both challenges, delivering a 4x leap in capacity across both LOS and NLOS under heavy interference conditions. Plus, the ability to do quick-turn installations with the IBR makes it well-suited to the common constraints of temporary service set-ups.”

Versatile, Easy to Deploy Radio with a Full CE Switch
Utilizing the IBR Predict network planning tool, the installation team was able to determine the optimal donor sites within 30 minutes, a huge benefit for these deployments, with numerous schedule changes, limited access and other time constraints. The IBR also proved its versatility in solving port and capacity limitations at 2 locations, where the IBR was deployed to utilize its MEF-certified Carrier Ethernet switching capabilities over fiber.

“The versatility and power of the IBR represent a leap forward in radio technology,” said Stuart Broome, Chief Sales & Marketing Officer, Fastback Networks. “Both permanent and temporary mobile infrastructure providers are turning to the IBR to quickly scale wireless capacity and transform the economics of delivering mobile service anywhere.”

Fastback Networks Elevate LTE Backhaul Performance With 800 Mbps Wireless Transport Solution

San Jose, California — September 8, 2014 — Fastback® Networks today announced higher speed backhaul capability, raising the performance bar for LTE backhaul devices. Fastback’s Intelligent Backhaul Radio™ (IBR), the only wireless backhaul solution meeting all the requirements of LTE cellular, now delivers throughput of over 800 Mbps while sustaining its industry leading low latency across all radio conditions from Line of Sight (LOS) to the most challenging Non Line of Sight (NLOS) scenarios. The new IBR capabilities will be showcased at Super Mobility Week, Mobile Backhaul Pavilion, Fastback Booth #4155, September 9 – 11, in Las Vegas, NV.

The IBR is the only wireless backhaul solution that meets all the stringent eNodeB LTE basestation requirements, while enabling acceleration of LTE deployments in locations where fiber is too expensive or too slow to deploy. The IBR’s latest speed of over 800 Mbps at up to 2 km range builds on its existing best in class capabilities. These include the industry’s lowest latency (0.5 ms), and reliable Any Line of Sight (AnyLOS™) operation providing simultaneous support of NLOS, nLOS and LOS conditions in a single device.  Applications include Macrocell LTE upgrade (from 3G), Macrocell LTE fill-in, and indoor or outdoor LTE and LTE-A small cell backhaul that requires reliable operations in NLOS conditions combined with high speeds and low latency.

“The Fastback IBR is now deployed by multiple US carriers, reliably carrying LTE traffic in NLOS and other conditions previously considered untenable,” said Kevin Duffy, CEO & Co-founder, Fastback Networks. “As carriers evolve their networks with more sectorization, Voice-Over-LTE (VoLTE), and LTE-Advanced, backhaul speed must continue to increase. The new higher performance IBR is an enabling element in operators’ ever growing march to deliver LTE everywhere.”

Redefining Backhaul to Meet the Needs of LTE

The IBR is purpose-built to meet all the requirements of LTE networks, where high performance backhaul to millions of upgraded cell sites, and tens of millions of new sites, is critical to success. The unprecedented performance features of the IBR are geared to enabling these increasingly dense user environments. Fastback’s patented interference mitigation technology, Extreme Interference Protection (XIP™) is key to sustained performance in the ever increasingly noisy radio environments caused by Wi-Fi, blutooth, cordless phones, and the emerging Internet of Things.

Freedom of Location

Equally critical is the IBR’s ability to deliver the highest throughput and lowest latency across Any Line of Sight, from LOS to complete NLOS. This enables mobile service infrastructure to be placed where needed for maximum spectral efficiency and customer demand – on towers or poles, or inside or outside of structures – with a reliable backhaul link to locations that have been previously unreachable.

Site Simplicity, Ease of Installation & Maintenance

A typical IBR installation site contains far fewer managed elements, a result of the unique integration of radio and switch hardware and software within the IBR system. Incorporating the functions of a carrier class, high performance radio, Carrier Ethernet switch, 1588v2 timing, UNI-Demarc, NID and SLA-OAM, CFM and PM capabilities, the IBR requires dramatically less space, power and minimized points of failure. Featuring power over Ethernet, auto alignment and rapid synchronization, the IBR can be mounted, configured and in-service anywhere by non-skilled labor in less than 15 minutes. The IBR’s patented technology eliminates the need for recurring alignment.

Availability

The Fastback IBR configurable to over 800 Mbps will be generally available in Q4, 2014.
