Fastback Doubles Intelligent Backhaul Radio Speed To 2Gbps Non Line of Sight

Leap in speed with sub-millisecond latency sets new industry performance benchmark for Non Line of Sight backhaul to enable the 5G mobile network

San Jose, California — August 29, 2016 — Fastback Networks® today announced the new 2 Gbps capable Intelligent Backhaul Radio (IBR) 1300 release, the industry’s first 5 GHz Any Line of Sight  backhaul solution to meet both the higher speed and lower latency requirements of 5G networks.  With this leap in capacity, a discrete form factor (8x10x3.5 inches), and a multitude of advanced ease of deployment features, the IBR-1300 delivers on both the performance and usability features required to enable multi-gigabit carrier grade backhaul service for 5G networks, macro and small cell fill-in, and fiber extension.

“The IBR-1300 is the only 5 GHz backhaul solution that offers low enough latency (350 us typical) to meet 4G and 5G carrier network requirements, provides non-line-of-sight (NLOS) and line-of-sight (LOS) ranges up to 20 km, automatically self-aligns and deploys with all skill levels of installation technicians, operates in full duplex mode without separate “A” and “B” side units, and utilizes standard on board AC power,” said  Dr Kevin J. Negus, Co-founder and CTO of Fastback Networks. “And now with this upgrade, the IBR-1300 is also the only 5 GHz backhaul solution in the world that provides up to 2 Gbps of reliable user throughput.”

“Microwave Non Line of Sight connectivity will play an increasingly important role as mobile operators seek to backhaul ever more densely deployed radio end points—either macro cells or small cells, said Richard Webb, Research Director, Mobile Backhaul & Small Cells, IHS Markit. “Up until now, NLOS backhaul had a challenge in terms of capacity, but with this announcement, Fastback has continued to build on its track record of innovation in the NLOS segment by driving the high capacity required for LTE macro and 5G backhaul.”

In addition to up to 100% increase in throughput performance, the new release delivers additional features that further advance the flexibility, reliability and deployability of the IBR.  For operators utilizing network architectures that handle extra-large packets, the IBR now supports jumbo frames up to over 9000 bytes, enabling the efficiency achieved with these architectures.  A local Ethernet port enhances management and monitoring, and supports link aggregation. And other features further improve performance in NLOS, enhance interference mitigation, and expand carrier grade QoS features. The new higher speed software release, available in October 2016, will be offered as an upgrade option to existing IBR 1300 customers.

IBR Deployments
The IBR is enabling mobile network operators to locate radio access equipment where needed to increase network density and improve reliability. The IBR is widely deployed by Tier One mobile networks providing high capacity backhaul for network densification via macro cell upgrade and fill-in, and small cell deployments. San Jose, California — February 16, 2016  — Fastback Networks® today announced its latest innovation, the highly compact Intelligent Backhaul Radio (IBR) 1300, a new solution that delivers 900 Mbps performance in the smallest form factor. The new discrete form factor and other advances enable the ultimate freedom of location for mounting on any tower, building or street asset anywhere backhaul is required to support carrier grade backhaul service. This flexibility assures operators can locate cellular radio access equipment where it is most needed to complement existing backhaul, increase network density, or improve reliability. The IBR 1300 allows operators to rapidly connect sites, address network “choke” points and provide flexibility in deployment.

The IBR-1300 is packed with both technical and economic advances, including world-first breakthroughs in transmission to ease set-up and mitigate interference, on-board power to simplify install, and a compact design that guarantees deployment in any location or environment.  These and other innovations were driven by 1000’s of customer engagements to address the real-world challenges of network densification, both technically and economically.  The IBR 1300 is part of the all new Fastback Networks product line-up of sub6 GHz, 60 GHz, and 70-80 GHz backhaul radios. These licensed and unlicensed complementary solutions extend the reach of high performance Carrier Ethernet and are universally easy and economical to install, deploy, maintain and scale.

“Backhaul capacity, affordability and deployability are all critical, as operators densify their networks with wireless fiber fill-in via macro and small cells in ever increasing numbers,” says Kevin Duffy, CEO and Co-founder, Fastback Networks. “High performance backhaul devices must be designed to make operators network densification job easier. The IBR 1300 sets a new standard for high performance, reliable, operationally elegant, and economically deployable urban backhaul.”

Packed with Innovations
At 900 Mbps and a mere 8x10x4 inches, 50% smaller than its predecessor, the IBR-1300 is the fastest, smallest and most versatile radio available. The IBR 1300 delivers even higher performance by enabling the full radio spectrum to be available at all times to both the transmit and receive channels, while at the same retaining very low (less than 400 us) latency . This innovative use of FDD (Frequency Division Duplex) transmission dramatically cuts installation time through immediate alignment of the radio link, and further advances Fastback’s Extreme Interference Protection (XIP) for more connections in more locations. In addition, beamforming technology on both transmit and receive channels is another industry first of the IBR-1300, which improves reliability for high density, large scale deployments. And the IBR-1300 is the only radio in its class that can operate using integrated AC power when no other source is available. This is ideal for small cell deployments in city centers and urban locations using street furniture, while the small form factor is well suited to the new “shrouds” required by many municipalities.

Ease of Deployment Redefined
During installation, an immediate IBR 1300 link can always be achieved without “swapping ends” and incurring the related cost. This simplifies installation, troubleshooting, configuration and cuts the cost of deployment spares in half. Very quick and uncomplicated alignment is a strength of the IBR, enabled by the wide azimuthal and vertical apertures that make installation and operation simple.

The IBR-1300 operates across any line of sight (AnyLOS) radio environments. In addition, Fastback’s 3D Ray Tracing network planning tool, IBR Predict, is offered to Fastback customers to quickly and accurately predict backhaul radio performance across Any Line of Sight, including LOS, near LOS to complete NLOS.

The IBR-1300 will be available in FCC regulatory markets in Q1 2016, and in ETSI regulatory markets in Q2 2016. The radio operates in the 5GHz spectrum that is licence free in FCC and ETSI regulated countries.

Fastback Networks Powers High Capacity Mobile Backhaul for US High Profile Tech, Music & Film Event – SXSW

San Jose, California —March 25, 2015 — Fastback® Networks today announced that its Intelligent Backhaul Radio (IBR) was deployed successfully at South by Southwest (SXSW) 2015, providing the wireless backhaul vital to mobile service for the annual film, interactive, and music event that took place March 13 – 22 in Austin, Texas, with 230,000 attendees. Deployed by wireless design and construction consultant SWCWC, Inc. to carry Tier 1 operator traffic, the Fastback IBR delivered 100% up-time across its 20-day deployment, combined with industry-beating levels of installation speed and ease, interference mitigation and throughput.

“From what we experienced at SXSW this year, Fastback is set to revolutionize the provisioning of bandwidth for temporary events,” said Terry Bruner, President, SWCWC, Inc. “The Fastback IBR solved all our challenges at SXSW literally in one swoop. Starting with how quickly it went up and automatically established its link to how impervious it was to obstructions and interference, we were able to do things around the Fastback IBR that absolutely would not have been possible with any other backhaul radio we use.”

The Fastback IBR provided SWCWC with new options for temporary bandwidth provisioning in the following areas:

  • Deployment speed and simplicity – The IBR was deployed to bring carrier grade wireless Ethernet traffic from a permanent macro site to a temporary cell site on wheels (CoW). The IBR was mounted and auto-established the required link inside of 30 minutes. There was no need for any manual alignment, which would have required bringing in a man-lift (an impossibility given the highly constricted site location).
  • Interference tolerance – SWCWC was one of several vendors at SXSW using available frequency in a landscape populated with large numbers of CoWs and WiFi base stations. The IBR interference mitigation feature that dynamically adjusts to the best available frequencies to ensure optimum operation, eliminated the need to revisit the site and manually select new frequencies, enabling the extremely high reliability.
  • Reliable high performance – The IBR delivered carrier-grade reliability and performance, with 100% uptime for the link during the deployment with available throughput of 675 Mbps. In contrast, SWCWC’s previous backhaul radio solutions typically could not exceed 120 Mbps. The IBR also enabled SWCWC mobile service to benefit from the absolute lowest latency of any backhaul radio available (‹500 µsec).

The IBR handles unobstructed Line-of-Sight (LOS), partially obstructed Near-Line-of-Sight (nLOS) and totally obstructed Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) links with carrier-grade reliability and performance.

“Fastback’s innovative IBR represents a leap forward in unlicensed radio technology,” said Scott McClure, Broadband and Networking Business Unit Director, TESSCO, Fastback’s distribution partner supplying SWCWC. “The IBR non line-of-sight and interference mitigation capabilities combined with high throughput expand the viability of wireless backhaul in challenging locations or environments.”

“Proven in permanent Tier 1 carrier LTE deployments, and at demanding temporary events including the recent Super Bowl and SXSW, the IBR enables organizations to bring high performance, high reliability wireless backhaul to more places, more cost-effectively, than previously possible,” said Stuart Broome, Chief Sales & Marketing Officer, Fastback Networks. “As data traffic demand continues to build dramatically at special events, as well as for permanent mobile infrastructure, providers are turning to the IBR to quickly scale wireless capacity and transform the economics of delivering mobile service anywhere.”
